Chance The Rapper Releases Acoustic Reimaginings Of Three Beloved Coloring Book Tracks.
Chance The Rapper has released acoustic reimaginings of three fan-favorite tracks, “Same Drugs,” “Blessings,” and “Summer Friends,” from his landmark mixtape Coloring Book, as he continues celebrating the project’s 10th anniversary on tour.
Among the new recordings is an acoustic version of “Same Drugs,” the same arrangement Chance performed on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in August to kick off the Coloring Book 10th anniversary celebration and tour. The tracks are featured on the Coloring Book Deluxe Gold Vinyl edition, available now at all remaining stops on the Coloring Book 10 Year Anniversary Tour.
The Coloring Book 10 Year Anniversary Tour kicked off August 8 in Chicago at Ravinia and has since made stops across North America, including Montreal, Toronto, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Atlanta, Nashville, Dallas, Houston, Phoenix, San Francisco and Seattle. The tour continues tonight in Council Bluffs, Iowa, with 5 remaining stops before wrapping up Sunday, October 11, at Citizens Live at The Wylie in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Released in May 2016, Coloring Book marked a defining moment in Chance The Rapper’s career and a breakthrough for independent music. With the project, Chance became the first independent artist to win a GRAMMY Award, earning three awards, including Best New Artist, Best Rap Album and Best Rap Performance for “No Problem” featuring Lil Wayne and 2 Chainz. The critically acclaimed mixtape helped reshape perceptions around streaming, artist independence, and the evolving music landscape. A decade later, the project continues to reach new milestones, earning its RIAA Platinum certification earlier this year.
Blending gospel, hip-hop and soulful live instrumentation, Coloring Book featured collaborations with Kanye West, Justin Bieber, Kirk Franklin, Lil Wayne, 2 Chainz, T-Pain and Saba. Chance created the project alongside longtime collaborators Nico Segal, Peter Cottontale, and The Social Experiment, with additional production from Kaytranada, Brasstracks, and Francis and the Lights. Coloring Book received widespread critical acclaim, with Rolling Stone hailing it a “gospel-rap masterpiece” and The New York Times describing Chance as “a crusader and a pop savant.” Complex called the project “a defining moment for independent artists,” recognizing its significance within the independent music landscape.
