Chance The Rapper Celebrates 1-Year Anniversary of ‘STAR LINE’

This Saturday, August 15, marks the one-year anniversary of Chance The Rapper’s STAR LINE, a project that found Chance exploring faith, identity and community through a broader Black diasporic lens. The 17-track album debuted at #2 on Spotify’s Top Albums Debut USA Chart and #3 globally, introducing a new chapter in Chance’s storytelling and creative evolution.

Inspired in part by Chance’s travels to Ghana and Jamaica, STAR LINE draws its name and creative foundation from Marcus Garvey’s Black Star Line. Across the album, Chance connects that history to the present through intentional lyricism, cultural references and experimental production. Faith, long central to Chance’s catalog, remains present throughout STAR LINE, but is approached through themes of liberation and revolution, examining the relationship between spirituality, collective freedom and action.

That perspective runs throughout records like “The Negro Problem,” “Drapetomania,” “Letters” and “No More Old Men,” with NPR noting that the album “recasts the affable indie rapper as a skeptic of the state and champion of the collective. Throughout the project we hear excerpts from Richard Pryor in the landmark documentary Wattstax, which chronicles the 1965 Watts Riots and the subsequent 1972 benefit concert held in Los Angeles. Chance uses this to draw parallels to the current state of the nation as well as the healing power of music and community.

STAR LINE features collaborators including Joey Bada$$, Lil Wayne, Smino, Vic Mensa, BJ the Chicago Kid, Young Thug, Jamila Woods, Do or Die, Jazmine Sullivan, and more, with production from Rodney “Darkchild” Jerkins, Peter CottonTale, and Nico Segal. Brandon Breaux, the creative mind behind Chance’s iconic early artwork, returned to helm the album’s visual identity.

The one-year anniversary comes as Chance is currently celebrating another milestone with the 10th anniversary of Coloring Book. Earlier this week, he kicked off The Coloring Book 10 Year Anniversary Tour with a sold-out show in Cleveland, beginning a North American run that continues through mid-October.
