Eve & Gwen Go Behind the Scenes of “Let Me Blow Your Mind”

Eve and Vevo have released a new installment of Footnotes for the Grammy-winning 2001 classic “Let Me Blow Your Mind.” The episode features exclusive commentary from Eve and Gwen Stefani about the collaboration experience, the recording process, favorite moments and more.

During the episode, Eve recalls the record being a definitive career statement, meant to be “fun and cocky and celebratory” to show the industry she was “here to stay.” The episode also mentions the night Eve was working with Dr. Dre to finish the song, “Dre was like, ‘You’re not leaving the studio until this song is done.’ I hated him that day, but I’m happy he made me stay.”

Eve shares that she was actually advised against the collaboration. “I got told that that was never going to work, that people would be like, ‘Why are these two chicks together?” Eve pushed back, trusting her “gut feeling” and that she pushed back insisting on trying it out and that they would sound great together. Gwen echoes this adding, “we appreciated each other’s worlds and coming together, we knew we were going to create something new and have this fresh energy.”

The episode also includes notes about the music video cameos from Dr. Dre, Jadakiss and Styles P, the favorite scene with the “quad bikes” and the historic accolades the song received, including winning the first ever Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration in 2002.

FULLY TRANSCRIBED BELOW:

00:13 – I remember being so excited about where my career was headed and the music I was making. The record is meant to be fun and cocky and celebratory. I was in the music business and here to stay. – Eve

00:32 – Interscope set up the recording session with Dre, and I listened to a few beats, but when this came on I instantly loved the drums. Then Scott Storch added keys and it all came together. – Eve

00:53 – In an interview with Glamour, Eve admitted “it’s one song that I wrote fully. I write my own stuff, but usually I get lazy after I write verses. I don’t want to write the chords, and Dre was like, ‘You’re not leaving the studio until this song is done.’ I hated him that day, but I’m so happy he made me stay.”

01:12 – I had always been a fan of No Doubt and just had this gut feeling that Gwen and I would sound great on the track, vibe-wise. Thankfully we were on the same label, so it was easy to get in contact. – Eve

01:35 – Eve was advised against the collab, telling Glamour, “I got told that that was never going to work, that people would be like, ‘Why are these two chick together?” She pushed back, insisting on trying it out and if it didn’t work no one would hear the song.

02:03 – We had this chemistry because we came from completely different worlds, but we had similar tastes, interests, and creativity. We appreciated each other’s worlds and coming together we knew we were going to create something new and have this fresh energy. – Gwen Stefani

02:24 – I don’t know what business I had being in that video, I felt like a fish out of water, but at the same time that’s what was so cool about it. – Gwen Stefani

02:48 – Eve is regarded as the First Lady of the Ruff Ryders, which also included Jadakiss and Styles P, who make a quick cameo at the bar in the video.

03:03 – The video won the 2001 MTV Video Music Award for best Female Video, a major accolade at the time.

03:23 – The song won the Grammy for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration in 2002, the first year the category existed.

03:42 – We had a great time on Set! My favorite scene is me on the quad and Gwen in the car and the bounce to the music. And the mug shots and us vibing at the end. – Eve

03:56 – Dr. Dre also makes an appearance at the end of the video, bailing Eve and Gwen out of jail.
