Sony Music Group Joins Industry Push for Ethical AI and Protections for Creative Work.
Sony Music Group joins artists, authors, researchers, professors as well as recording artists, songwriters and media organizations across the U.S. in supporting Stealing Isn’t Innovation, calling on Congress and AI companies to uphold artists’ and creators’ rights through the protection of copyright law.
The campaign—launched by the Human Artistry Campaign (HAC)—addresses the growing issue of AI companies using copyrighted work without authorization or compensation. It advocates for ethical practices through licensing and partnerships, demonstrating that technological innovation can advance while safeguarding creative work.
This effort was inspired by the success of the U.K.’s Make It Fair campaign, which united thousands of musicians and creators to defeat proposals that would have allowed AI companies to exploit copyrighted works without consent. Earlier this year, more than 1,000 musicians—including Kate Bush, Myles Smith, and Annie Lennox—helped secure that victory in the U.K., and we are working to achieve the same outcome here in the United States.
The core principle is clear: using artists’ work without consent or compensation is theft—not progress.
