Hailing from Baltimore, Maryland, classically trained pianist-turned-rapstress, Tiye Phoenix, is back with her latest tour de force, The CROWNLOADS TP. Phoenix is also one-fourth of revered underground collective, Polyrhythm Addicts, alongside DJ Spinna, Shabaam Sahdeeq and Mr. Complex.
Let’s hop into this single, “RESET” — Tell me about this particular track; how did it come to fruition?
The track is basically me voicing my need for an extended vacation, lol! Or actually, the need to modify life..I hear the word “RESET” so often…especially in these modern times…life is continually being revamped on so many levels…people often express the need for a “reset” a lot…reset seems to be a popular word these days. Nonetheless, there is nothing wrong with pushing the reset button when you want to recharge, recalibrate, or recenter yourself. It’s a mandatory process to achieve balance in this world.
Of course “RESET” comes courtesy of your latest body of work, The CROWNLOADS TP — Conceptually, what does this title represent both to and for you?
The Crownloads TP is 7 songs, all which align with the 7 chakras… A crownload is a variation of the word download, and it refers to a moment of inspiration, illumination or realization that occurs suddenly and awakens the crown chakra. It’s a lightbulb moment of awareness. Instead of saying,”I just got an idea,” I say, “I just got a crownload.” The songs are all crownloads that I received at various points in time.
How then does The CROWNLOADS TP either differ and / or compare to previous Tiye Phoenix efforts?
Every musical project reflects a noticeable level of growth and personal, creative, and spiritual expansion. Each project mirrors experiences I have in that recent time frame.
As a lyricist when you sit down to pen your rhymes, where do you draw inspiration from?
I don’t have a specific time when I write; writing happens at random times..I often crownload rhymes during that phase in between waking life and sleep. I have the moon in Pisces…I crownload music during sleep phases.
That said, how do you describe and / or define the style of music that you create and / or perform?
High-vibrational hip hop. That’s the term.
Where does your moniker, Tiye Phoenix, originally derive from?
Tiye is an ancient Egyptian Pharoahess Phoenix – a legendary songbird who is consumed by a fire, and emerges from the fire even more empowered and beautiful than before.
Looking ahead, say five or maybe even ten years from now, where do you see yourself?
I will be a professor – doctor – of Psychology; I’m currently in grad school for those who don’t know…still an artist, and doing my part to raise the vibrations on the planet…lol!
As for the immediate, what’s next for you, Tiye?
I am loving my promotion of CROWNLOADS.
Curious, do you think there’ll ever be another Polyrhythm Addicts’ project?
It doesn’t seem likely, but I know all of the members are doing well.
Is there anything I left out or just plain forgot to mention?
High-vibrational hip-hop; no Bars Wasted!! That’s the move!
Lastly, any “parting” words for our readers?
Thank you so much for tappin’ in, and connecting to the music. I love my tribe!!!
