This is the spot where you’ll see upcoming producers and Industry veterans in the game. A lot of people don’t know what goes into production. This will be the section where we feature the hottest producers in hip hop. Each month we’ll bring to you a new producer along with their background.

THIS MONTH’S FEATURE IS: J WELLS

By way of Los Angeles & Atlanta, Rapper/Producer J. Wells became a protégé of J-Ro (of Tha Alkaholiks), quickly learning the value of crafting melodies and creating compelling songs. Encouraged early on by J-Ro, J. Wells was invited to join the legendary Likwit Crew which includes Tha Alkaholiks (E-Swift, J Ro and Tash), King Tee, LootPack, Phil Da Agony, and Defari as well as the extended Likwit family of Xzibit, Dilated Peoples, Planet Asia, Madlib and Evidence, amongst others. Additionally, J. Wells toured with Tha Alkaholiks on Snoop Dogg’s 2001 “Puff Puff Pass Tour”.

J. Wells produced one of the most sought after mixtapes in West Coast mixtape history with his debut, “J. Wells presents: The Wolfpac Mixtape”, which garnered massive critical acclaim and sold more copies than almost any West Coast mixtape. The CD features guests including Kurupt, Styliztik, James DeBarge, El DeBarge, Y.A., Roscoe, J Ro, Tash and Prodigal Sunn.

In 2005, J. Wells completed his debut album, “Digital Master”, which was hugely successful throughout the West Coast. This was his debut release on his own label, Bonzi Records. It features new Artist signed to Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Records Bishop Lamont, as well as other artists including Method Man, Goodie Mob, Tha Liks, Jayo Felony, Kurupt, Roscoe, and Planet Asia.

J. Wells also produced the Goodie Mob single, “Play Yo Flutes”, featuring Sleepy Brown, for Goodie Mob’s album “One Monkey Don’t Stop No Show”.

Recently Wells produced songs for for Snoop Dogg’s forthcoming album “The Blue Carpet Treatment”. There has been a surge in demand for J. Wells after having his tracks featured
on hit taste-maker shows such as, “The Sopranos” and “Six Feet Under”, and F. Gary Gray’s blockbuster film and soundtrack “Be Cool”.

His songs are also featured in the video games: EA Sports, “2004 Tiger Woods Golf” and EA Sports, “2006 Fight Night”, as well as commercials for major corporations including McDonald’s and Coors Light, directed by Paul Hunter.

J. Wells is currently working on his second album, “Digital Smoke”, under his own label Bonzi Records / Universal.

Currently, J. Wells can be found in the studio working with Ne-Yo, Rakim, Petey Pablo, Tyrese, Inspectah Deck, Dead Prez, Dogg Pound and Bigg Gipp.
