Janelle Monae earns her first No. 1 set on the Top R&B Albums chart (dated May 12) as Dirty Computer opens at the summit. The album earned 54,000 equivalent album units in the week ending May 3, according to Nielsen Music.
The Computer debut is helped by multiple hits from the album on the Hot R&B Songs chart. “Make Me Feel” reached No. 9 in March and was quickly followed by the Grimes-featured “Pynk” (No. 21) in March and “I Like That” (No. 24) in May.
Pre-Computer, Monae’s previous best on Top R&B Albums was a No. 2 peak for The Electric Lady in 2013, one year after the Top R&B Albums chart began. Prior to the chart’s inception, Monae also reached the top 20 of the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart with two projects, Metropolis: The Chase Suite (No. 20, 2008) and The Archandroid: Suites II and III (No. 4, 2010).
