It’s Official: J Dilla To Be Honored With His Own Day In Detroit.

Friday is officially Detroit’s first J. Dilla Day in honor of the music legend.

Family members of the late J. Dilla attended City Council yesterday as the lawmakers passed a resolution to recognize Feb. 7, J. Dilla’s birthday.

The resolution calls him “one of the most influential musicians and music producers of our era.”

Dilla’s daughter Ja’Mya Yancey expressed her gratitude for the prestigious honor during the council meeting: “Words cannot describe how grateful we are for this declaration,” Ja’Mya Yancey, daughter of J. Dilla, told council. “My sister and I continue to try to uplift and honor his name and legacy and this is such a monumental step to help us continue on with the work he left behind.”

Joylette Hunter, spokesperson for the James Dewitt Yancey (J. Dilla) Estate, added that she had recently been given some found music of his, and it’s being assessed to see if it could be released.

What’s next: The reveal of the J. Dilla Street Sign is Thursday at 9am at Nevada Avenue and Charest Street.
