Starz is developing The Book of Jose, a series about the life of hip-hop star Joseph “Fat Joe” Cartagena from BET Studios.
The project was originally announced as in the works at Showtime in 2022 before it stalled. It has now found a new home at the network where Cartagena hosts the TV talk show Fat Joe Talks.
The Book of Jose is a scripted series based on the rags-to-riches story of Grammy-nominee Fat Joe, and chronicles his evolution from growing up in the Bronx to becoming a global superstar with a career spanning over three decades.
The pilot will be written by Kenya Barris (Black-ish, We The People) and a newcomer to the project, Dominic Colón (The Corps). Executive producer Jessy Terrero will direct the pilot. Executive producers also include Cartagena, Barris, Colón, Terrero, and E. Brian Dobbins. Barris produces the series through Khalabo Ink Society, with Adam Kassan overseeing the project for the company, while Dobbins will produce through Artists First. Ulysses Terrero, Luis Velasco, and Ashley Acevedo will also produce. Sabrina Eisenstadt oversees the project for BET Studios.
Colón is a writer and actor from the Bronx, New York, whose television pilot Papi, made The Blacklist’s inaugural Latinx TV List. As one of the top three finalists, he received a blind pilot deal at Hulu. Most recently, he served as a writer on the upcoming Netflix dramedy The Corps, the final TV series produced by Norman Lear, who died in 2023. Colón has had projects in development at Hulu, ABC & UTV and is a graduate of the 2024 WGAE Showrunner Training Academy.
As an actor, he has appeared in over 60 television shows and movies. He will soon be seen in a recurring role in Brad Inglesby’s upcoming HBO limited series Task starring Mark Ruffalo. Additionally, Colón has taught acting and playwriting at NYC high schools, hospitals, juvenile detention facilities, and Rikers Island. He is represented by CAA and Del Shaw. S: Deadline
