She is best known for winning Penthouse magazine's Pet of the Year title for 2003. She is also noted for being one of the few pornographic actresses with an Indian Punjabi Sikh background.

Leone's father was born in Tibet and raised in New Delhi, while her mother is from a small town called Nahan, Himachal Pradesh. Her family moved to California in 1996. After graduating high school in 1999, she began modeling and eventually transitioned into nude modeling. Leone began appearing in many magazines and websites in the nude, and eventually posed in a layout for Penthouse magazine in 2001 (Pet of the Month March), as well as being featured in the Holiday 2001 edition of Hustler magazine as a Hustler Honey. Her popularity and beauty allowed her to win the 2003 Penthouse Pet of the Year award. She mostly does softcore modeling and videos, both solo and lesbian.

She has signed an exclusive contract with Vivid Entertainment, where she has now moved into hardcore videos, though only lesbian. In 2004, she was part of "No more Bush Girls", where along with several other popular adult actresses, they shaved off their pubic hair in protest of the Bush presidency. Her first release under vivid was titled Sunny, and was followed by her 2006 release, Virtual Vivid Girl Sunny Leone (which took four days to film). She was the first Vivid star to have such an interactive feature ever. In June 2006, Leone became an American citizen. Her follow up movie "Sunny and Cher" was released in October 2006, and her most recent release was "The Female Gardener" which was released in January 2007. She stars in the remake of "Debbie does Dallas...Again", the first Vivid movie to be released on Blu-Ray Disc and HD DVD, starring as Christie, released in April 2007. Her last movie released to date was "It's Sunny in Brazil".

Leone announced on The Howard Stern Show on January 23, 2008 that she is currently single after breaking off her engagement with her former fiance.

In February 2008, it was announced that Sunny Leone will be the first adult performer to star in a Bollywood film. Filming for "Pirate's Blood" started mid-February 2008 in Oman. This English-language thriller will also star veteran Bollywood actor, Salim Bahwan. The Arabic press has dubbed Ms. Leone as the 'Indian-American Marilyn Monroe'.

How did you get started in the Industry?
I was sitting in my English class and this girl gave me a number to a agent. When I walked into the office I had no idea that he was a adult agent. He had adult mags on the wall. He then told me what he did and I said ok I can try it. We started out just taking photos and that’s it.

How many films have you done to date?
I have made 4 girl/girl movies for vivid and 2 boy/girl movies. I have also made a bunch of soft core vids for penthouse and many other companies.

Do you go out with just regular guys?
I go out with who ever intrigues me. I don’t have a preference of whether they are in adult or not.

What intrigues you about the adult industry?
Everything. I like the idea of waking up in the morning and doing something new each day. I love taking photos and I love running my sites. Its always different everyday.

What other interests outside of the biz are you inspired by?
I love painting, being creative, people who are positive and love their jobs, there is nothing more motivating then someone telling you all the stuff they are doing and then you want to work just as hard to get that feeling.

What do you hope to be doing say 5-10 yrs from now?
I will be running hopefully a huge affiliate program with multiple sites. I know that I will always be in adult but just not always in front of the camera. Oh and hopefully married and having babies.

I do listen to hip hop. I love anything that I can dance to.

If you could be 1 person for a day ( anyone) who would it be? Angelina jolie and not just because she gets to bang Brad but because of all the other work she does. She gives so much to the world and people all the time and I would love to be in her shoes for a day.
